Why can't people wait for you to get off the elevator before they board??? This really annoys me. I purposely stand right in the front middle of the door that is about to open (If I am in elevator by myslef)so people will have no choice but to wait. But wouldn't you know it so idiot squeezed past me to get on elevator while I was trying to get off and had the nerve to grunt at me. How rude.

I personally cannot stand being alone in the elevator with 1 other person, when that person decides to stand sideways. I face the door, no matter where I am in the elevator and this other person makes me feel uncomfortable, feeling like they're staring at me.

I haven't read all 111 responses but did anyone point out that stairs are hazardous as they are typically made of cement, have no soft surfaces to pad your fall, and generally are ugly - not to mention there is no federal standard as to the height/depth of the tread/risers. This makes stairs risky. I don't care if there are one-floor floozies, just be polite when getting on/off; smile and be sure your deodorant is up to snuff. I'm a boomer and I don't want to increase my risk of injury at this point in life.

I work with a man who insists on exercising his stupid elevator gentlemanness. He has to be the last on and then he stands in the doorway when the women are exiting. I want to say, "Get out of my way!" It makes me uncomfortable to have to walk so near, sometimes brushing against him on my way out. If he wants to exit last he should move to the back and stand there until we all are out.

This is ridiculous people.Curteous behavior should be taught from childhood and apply to all situations. The fact that this even had to be written is very sad

Bottom line: Get on the elevator or take the stairs! We don't let women drivers drive ahead of us on the road, do we? Its common sense: Get on and get out of the way of others!! Also, if you are getting off the elevator on a nearby floor, stay near the front!! Those alone are the BEST courtesies for the elevator.

This is site is very useful if you dont understand how to socialize or you are very introverted.

AS for the comments about americans, we do have a bad eating habit and should change our diets. Its unhealthy!

For those Brits who are leaving comments have you seen your own teeth! let me know and ill send you to a great dentist in America! they can really help you with that =P

Sterotypes are bad, and this isnt my impression but it is a sterotype of Brits.

We could all do a little change in our habits.

What about people who form a crowd that are WAITING for the elevator and give no regard to people who have been waiting longer than them. If they just walked in the door to the elevator bank and theres 15 other people waiting, they just shove their way to the front of the group and think they're entitled to get on first???!?! Drives me insane and nothing in this article touches on that - why not?

I worked at a hospital that required all it's staff to take the stairs if they had to only go up one floor or to go down only 1 or 2 floors (with obvious exceptions for carts, carrying heavy things, injuries, accompanying a patient, etc.). It freed up the elevators and aided the health of the staff.
