Blocking the Door

by site admin on 2/26/2005

It is inappropriate to block an elevator door from the outside for any reason. Do not abuse the safety devices built in to the elevator door. Refrain from sticking feet, hands, umbrellas, briefcases or other items in front of a closing elevator door.

Clearly you don’t give a damn about safety do you Black Domina? I suppose you keep a box of oily rags lying around your basement “just in case” as well.

It is rude to hold up the elevator while trying to finish a conversation between a person in the car and a person outside the car. Either get on or get off and finish.

I love it when the door opens and you are ready to get off. You see all these oversized hogs standing there ready to rush in before you can get off. When you say excuse me, they look at you as if you are at fault for impeding their entry. When I am ready to leave an elevator, and the only one on it, I always stand in the middle of the door, blocking the entry. One day I did this, and before I could move these 2 woman rushed in. I walked out, and did a shoulder block on her and sent her flying. As I walked away I heard, ouch that hurts, is he allowed to do that. Common sense folks. Those people are the same ones when they come to a stop sign to turn left, they take both lanes and hinder a person trying to make a right turn. What is it with woman, they have their brains sucked out when entering a elevator or get behind a wheel of a vehicle.

I agree that nobody should block the door from closing so they can get on. However, I saw this happen once to great amusement for those of us already in the car. A man rushed up to the door and stuck his newspaper in, hoping to make the door stay open. It closed anyway, and we got to watch his newspaper get shredded as the car moved. We all had a good laugh!

This is a legit rule. Common scenario in my building: downtown bank tower in financial district, elevator door closing, elevator full of people, door gap is about 4 inches, and Mr. Young Hotshot Banker sticks his hand in the gap and opens the door again because never mind us… he’s WAAAY too important to wait five seconds. This is genuinely rude in my view.

What you’re saying is… he’s too rude to wait five seconds, when in fact, he may have to wait several minutes depending on the availability of elevators in the building and you would literally on have to wait about 10 seconds for him to board and the doors to re-close. If he feels he has somewhere he needs to be, then that’s his perogative… if you have a problem waiting for him, take the stairs.

Also… i know that in some cases, continually holding a door back can be bad for an elevator motor… however, if I feel that I want to stop the door for someone, I may use my hand at the door instead of the door open button but only because in some elevators it’s like trying to decipher hiroglyphs as the doors are quickly closng… if time is a factor, I will stick my hand into the door catch 10 time out of 10.
