Closing the Door
Closing the door using the door close button should be done only when it is clear that no one is trying to board the elevator or when there are other cars available to go in the same direction. It is improper to close the door on someone that is moving toward the elevator.
It is also acceptable to close the door when you are in a full elevator that stops at a floor for a passenger who indicates they would like to wait for the next car. Give them a chance to make their decision to board or not to board before closing the door.

Does the close button work anyway?

In reply to ramblog’s question of the close button…I am a building engineer who routinely calls the state certified repair contractor (I can’t touch anything but a light bulb in there). Anyway, NO the close buttons do not work modern elevators, doors close on a time delay basis. The close button is for use with the fireman’s emergency switch, or if the car is switched to manual operation.

Well Mr. Building Engineer Dan, I’ll have you know the button in my elevator actually does work, and it’s a pretty new elevator (not one of those ones with a gate instead of a door, although that would be cool.) In an ideal universe the door close button would cause the doors to shut like a bear trap.

If there are several elevators and I am in the elevator is in a rush to get someplace, and someone is on the way toward the elevator, but not making an attempt to get there quickly, I’m not going to wait for them. However, if they make an attempt to get there quickly, I’ll wait.

I agree miguk. If you want me to wait show me some hustle out of respect that I am waiting for you and DO have a life other than watching you slow dance your way into elevator.
